India: Sphere Standards in Humanitarian Practice

The four-day course will develop holistic understanding of the participants on the rationale and structure of the latest Sphere Standards. This training is designed to provide a clear understanding on the minimum standards, indicators and key actions to be undertaken in the domain of: WASH; Food Security and Nutrition; Shelter and Settlement; and Health. With this training course it is expected that the participants’ capacity to understand and apply the Sphere Standards in humanitarian & DRR decision making and project implementation will be further enhanced that constitute the basis of Sphere Standards. The training would also deal with the practicalities of implementing Sphere in humanitarian response.

What is the focus of this course?

  • Orientation on the philosophy and approach of the Sphere Project.
  • Building understanding on the relationship between Sphere, Humanitarian Charter and Rights Based Programming.
  • Linkages and differences between (Sphere) Minimum Standards, Key Indicators, Key Actions and Guidance Notes.
  • Building understanding on the Core Humanitarian Standards and their linkages with technical interventions across all stages of the project cycle.
  • Application of Sphere in - assessments, planning, monitoring and evaluations - of humanitarian response programme.
  • Usage of standards and indicators (from each technical chapter) for an effective humanitarian response.

Course Outline

The first day of the training will introduce the participants to: Humanitarian Emergency; Sphere Project and Sphere Handbook; Humanitarian Charter; Protection Principles; and the Core Humanitarian Standard. The focus of the first day of training will be on familiarising the participants with ethical, legal and practical basis for humanitarian response.

On the second day of the training participants will be familiarized with the four essential domains in Sphere. The four domains which will be introduced to the participants are: WASH; Food Security & Nutrition; Shelter and Settlement; and Health. The participants will also be trained on how to apply Sphere Standards in their professional practice.

The third day of the training will enable participants in understanding concepts such as: Sphere Assessment & Analysis; Sphere and the Programme Cycle; Sphere Cash & Markets; and Sphere, Quality and Accountability.

On the final day of the training participants will be familiarized with Sphere and the Complementary Standards. The learnings from the training will further be strengthened through Simulation Exercises and open discussion between the participants. The training will be concluded with training evaluation and feedback from the participants.

  • Individuals engaged in the field of humanitarian sector and disaster risk reduction.
  • Individuals interested to work in the field of humanitarian sector and disaster risk reduction.
  • Agency program and operation staff working in the humanitarian aid Sector.

Who will conduct this course?

RedR India’s standard Sphere Training Module will be used in the training by our experienced trainers. The module has been developed, like all other training modules of RedR India, keeping global standards and practices in consideration. The training will be conducted by trainers with vast experience in relief work and the humanitarian sector and of applying Sphere in practice.

How will this course be conducted?

The emphasis during this four-day training will be on active learning of the participants through participatory methods. The methodology used in this training will comprise of following:

Group exercises, Case studies and scenarios, Demonstrations, Focus group discussions, Experiential learning and exchange among the participants.
